Throughout November, the Latvia's State Forests Scholarship in Art 2023 exhibition of the works created by students of the Latvian Academy of Arts (LMA) will be on view at the LVM Riga Customer Centre at 1 Vaiņodes Street. In their creative works, the young artists are looking for answers to the question of how to create associations with the sustainable development of the environment and the growing role of forests in Latvia.
Pēters Putniņš, Chairman of the LVM Board: “The forest has long inspired people to create, grow together and discover the unknown. For Latvians, it is also encoded as part of our identity and national strength. To look at the forest through the works of art students is to see the future in which we want to live. That is why JSC “Latvia's State Forests” is holding a scholarship competition in art already for the seventh year, linking creativity with young trees that grow and form a prosperous Latvia.”
The works of 15 finalists of the competition can be seen at the exhibition, supplemented with descriptions. The descriptions can be found in the exhibition catalogue in person or on the website www.lvm.lv/maksla.
“An exhibition of Peter Doig's paintings has just opened at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. His compositions often look in the direction of forests and figuratively sing of the splendour of nature. Latvia's State Forests Scholarship in Art is like a forest path for young painters, which leads to the depths of world's art forests,” said LMA Rector Kristaps Zariņš.
The winner of the competition will be announced at the end of the exhibition. The winner of the competition will receive a one-time scholarship of 1 500 euros. The scholarship competition has been held in cooperation with LMA since 2017.
The decision on granting the scholarship will be made by a jury from LVM and LMA, assessing the contestants' artistic professionalism and work compliance with the creative task of the competition. More information and the contest regulation are available at www.lvm.lv/maksla and www.lma.lv.
