Being aware of the volume of mineral materials needed for the national economy and industrial construction in the coming years, LVM Zemes dzīles plans to increase the scope of mineral material exploration work in 2023 by at least 50 % more than in 2022, as well as to open six new mineral extraction sites.
In 2022, LVM Zemes dzīles organized sand and gravel search works on an area of approximately 1 500 ha, and five new mining sites were opened; moreover, additional sectors were opened in seven mining sites, predicting an increase in demand.
“Last year was challenging for the construction industry due to the geopolitical situation, cost growth, availability of resources and ensuring the fulfilment of contracts, however, the demand for LVM mineral materials was significantly higher than in 2021. The volume of mineral materials sold between 2020 and 2022 has almost tripled, reaching 1.55 million cubic metres of mineral materials and their aggregates,” says Karīna Āboliņa-Zalpetere, Sales Executive Director at LVM Zemes dzīles.
A large demand for mineral materials and their aggregates in the previous year was made up of the amount of sand sold for the Ķekava bypass project, reaching 699 thousand cubic metres. In 2022, LVM Zemes dzīles mineral materials and their aggregates were also supplied to municipalities and State Limited Liability Company “Latvijas Valsts Ceļi” for the renovation, reconstruction and resurfacing of various road sections. High-quality mineral materials are also widely used for the construction of streets and bicycle paths, the construction of the infrastructure of the stadium and production building, the improvement of the degraded area on Pilssalas Street, as well as the construction works of the infrastructure of the children's and youth sports school in Jelgava. Mineral materials and their aggregates are also used for the construction and maintenance of forest roads, replacement of street surfaces, construction of water drainage system, repairs, and other purposes.
LVM Zemes dzīles ensures responsible and sustainable management of natural resources throughout the land management cycle – from exploration to the end of the life cycle of each quarry, when the mining site is recultivated, preparing it for the next purpose of management, most often, the planting of a new forest. In 2023, it is planned to recultivate seven mining sites.
