At the end of the spring planting season, almost 32 million high-quality tree seedings had been planted in the forests managed by JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM), planting more than 12 780 hectares. Forest planting works will continue again in September; during the summer, agrotechnical maintenance of young trees is carried out.
“This year's spring planting season was full of challenges and we had to look for and apply non-standard solutions. We strongly felt the lack of labour and the growing volume of planting works. We were often able to conclude contracts only as late as in the middle of the season, which caused stress to all the parties involved. This year's spring was very favourable for planting works. A total of almost 13 000 hectares were planted during the spring, which is 11 % more than last year. We will continue the work in September to meet the planned amount of planting for the year,” says Lauris Ropājs, Head of Forestry Production at LVM.
Last year, the forest was restored and planted on 17.8 thousand hectares, including 12.2 thousand hectares of planting. In turn, LVM tended 31.7 thousand hectares of young trees last year, which is slightly more than the year before – in 2020.
