This spring, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) completed the revitalization of two quarry areas in the “Ābeļu mežs” forest district in the South Latgale region of LVM: levelling the terrain and cleaning the area. This spring, area clean-up works were carried out to return the territory to forestry – the area of land where the new forest can be planted has been now arranged in proper order.
In the course of the works, garbage was collected, a 5-metre-high, dangerous concrete block structure was dismantled, and the terrain was levelled. The works were carried out in an old, abandoned quarry, which is not registered as a place of extraction of minerals; moreover, after evaluating the possibilities of the territory, it was recognized that opening a new quarry in this territory would be unprofitable.
“The terrain of the “gravel pits” excavated in these areas did not allow for forest management, because the area had many local and deep depressions, earth embankments, and it was also used as an illegal waste dump,” says Uģis Perševics, Construction Manager at LVM Real Estate Administration.
After completing the revitalization of the territory, the territory has been made safe for the public and part of the area has already been reforested.
