Inspired by Imants Ziedonis’ “Green Tale”, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) in cooperation with the Imants Ziedonis Foundation “Viegli” educational initiative “Ziedonis Class” invites children and young people aged 5 to 19 to participate in the sticker design competition “Oxygen” in 2022, revealing the role of trees and wood products in combating climate change.
To enter the competition, entrants must create a sticker design on this year's theme, oxygen, by 21 March 2022 – the UN International Forest Day. The design of the 15 cm diameter circular sticker should include a vision of how the forest, in the form of trees or wood products, fights human pollution by sequestering carbon dioxide and oxygen. The work can be done in both digital and paper format.
Encouraging students' curiosity about climate change and the importance of trees, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) together with JSC “Latvijas Finieris” and the European Forest Pedagogics organization will invite schools to sow and plant trees this spring. A special “Oxygen Pack” has been prepared for schools with pine seedlings and planting instructions, climate challenge games and other educational materials.
In honour of the UN International Forest Day on 21 March, LVM will present an “Oxygen Package” to each preschool and elementary school class that has participated in LVM's environmental education programme “Mother Nature Masterclass” or “Pigman’s Detectives” this school year. By April 2022, nearly 600 classes will receive the Oxygen Pack.
More than half of Latvia's territory is covered by forests, which annually produce 18 million tonnes of oxygen, which would be enough for 30 million people to breathe. Therefore, in preparation for the sticker competition, head to the nearest forest and get to know trees. The teaching aid “Wooden Passport” will be a great tool for research. At the exhibition “Oar, Moses and Radio” at the National Museum of History of Latvia you can explore the significance of wood in the history of Latvia. The exhibition reveals the interaction between man and wood from ancient history to the present day. Using the free app of the exhibition, you can walk around or in the vicinity of the centre of Riga and get to know both the trees growing there, as well as wooden buildings.
