A year ago, the JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” Mērsrags District head Andris Siliņš found a black stork nest with five fledglings in it. This year, the company’s experts visited the famous nest and discovered that it was occupied again.
At the beginning of April, JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” forest renovation and maintenance expert Solveiga Siliņa spotted two storks feeding in a stream near the place, and informed the company’s environmental expert Aija Ārgale, who visited the nest in the morning of April 29: “Moving as quietly as possible, I came to within 50 m from the nest, in a place that afforded a good view of the nest. Of course, there was a bird in it - brooding! I quickly took a few pictures and retreated. Everything fine over here. Hopefully, this year will be as productive to wild birds as last!”
In May and June, Northern Kurzeme forestry workers will visit and inspect all thirty black stork nests they know of. places where nests have been destroyed will also be checked, because quite often new nests are built not far from a destroyed nest or in its place, provided that the tree has not been destroyed. Last year, three new black stork nests were found, and information on one new black stork nest has been received this year.
